Gardner, Kansas: Where the Trails Divide
Historical
marker (photo-Sween)
"My dad, who had the wit of Will Rodgers
and the
direct, honest style of a self employed man, had his own theory
about the founding of Gardner. He said that where the
trails divided, there were two signs ... one said "Road to
Santa Fe" and the other said "Road to Oregon" and all those
going to Santa Fe went down the Santa Fe
road .... all those going to Oregon went down the Oregon trail ... But us
poor sob's couldn't read just settled right here in Gardner.
That's an account you won't get from the Chamber of
Commerce."
by Charles U. Finley, quoting his
father, Cecil Finley.
