[13] "KijeMennito otanjenìmin tchi opië'ötichko¯n Joseph mèkwa eniba¯t, otikòntchi: onichka¯n, otapin pinotchè, okiyinke, Egypting nennichàmo¯n, tipú tchi èï[ï]n nnach mìne kinoninan. Herode okúnitauwapiman Pinotchèyin ewi nissát.
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
[14] Kaönìchkát tchi okiotapinan Pinotchèyin, okiyinke, nipatipiúg, iwotchi eki matchit Egyptig ewi chiät.
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.

And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wisemen, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
[17] Iwötchi kinomikúg, kakitot Jeremie kanikanikikennitug, ekitot:
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
[18] Ramaïg notakosauwin okinotanauwa; kitchi mauwiwin, kitchi waönowin okinotanauwa; Rachel emowemát onidjanissan; tchowi ponênit[i]si; onidjanissan si kinibóg."
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Notes:

In the Potawatomi text, letters in brackets could not be read with certainty. Words added to the Latin name or the English translation are enclosed in brackets. The Jesuits constructed an elaborate orthography that utilized diacritical marks extensively. Occasionally, more than one such mark was associated with a single letter. In that event, the second diacritical mark follows the letter with which it is associated in the manuscript. Similarly, when the html symbol set does not include the letter/diacritical mark combination, the diacritical mark is inserted after the letter. In chapter 22, verse 18, /enemê¨kasoýe¯g/ demonstrates both of these situations.

1 The Holy Innocents is the name given by the Catholic Church to the boys of Bethlehem under two years of age murdered by King Herod. An octave, when used in this context, is an eight day period.
2 The priest was occasionally permitted to read a shorter version of the Gospel text. In this case, the priest could omit vv. 16-18 if he wished.
